Most successful electronics companies have adopted a strategy for product EMC testing i.e. electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). A key part of any such strategy is testing of conducted and radiated emissions, both of which are subject to government regulation in most countries. To help ensure success during formal compliance testing by an accredited lab, a growing number of companies are revising their product development process to include pre-compliance emc testing of electromagnetic interference (EMI).

According to some test specialists within the UK, a product that hasn’t been through pre-compliance testing has about a 10-percent chance of passing compliance testing on the first try. With narrow or shrinking windows of opportunity in the marketplace, the delays caused by design changes and the expense of retesting can put a new product at a deep disadvantage in a highly competitive market.

With pre-compliance emc testing, a series of preliminary assessments are conducted in accordance with the relevant standards. Although the measurements provide an approximation of expected EMI performance, they offer meaningful reassurance regarding the likelihood of successful compliance testing, prior to the product being then sent to an emc testing accredited lab.
